On October 2010, the Board of Regents in Georgia banned Undocumented students from the top 5 research universities on groundless economic and “public” concerns. That’s where Freedom University came in and gave me a new sense of hope. From a personal standpoint, and as a GUYA member, I believe that education is a human right. If I am perfectly qualified to attend any of the top 5 universities, why should I not be able to attend these institutions? Freedom University reinforced this opinion as most of my classmates are in my same position.
Freedom University is open to any student who wants to fight for the right to an education. It offers a rigorous, college-level course to its students, free of charge. The size of the class mirrors that of one being taught at UGA or GA Tech and the syllabus reflects those given by professors at Ivy League schools. Besides being my form of directly protesting the BOR’s ban, it is also helping me realize that if certain laws are unjust, I should speak out against them. It is teaching me that if I don’t know my history, I won’t know how to welcome my future. In a country that I’ve lived in for most of my life, where my rights and dreams are being suppressed over a 9-digit combination of numbers, Freedom University is helping me find a way through all of the obstacles I am currently facing. As my personal way of non-compliance, Freedom University is a radical, symbolic and peaceful manner of protest against non-educators, who are privatizing education in the state of GA.F.U., Board of Regents -- Long live Freedom University!
